d12 janus
(Roman Mythology)
The two-faced god who looks to both the past and the future, symbolising change and new beginnings.
Built in Hobart by John Bridge and launched in 1946, Janus has spent much of her long life racing around southern Tasmania. She has competed extensively on the Derwent, at Cygnet and from Kettering, building a colourful history along the way.
Janus has certainly had her share of adventures, with stories of being commandeered, washing ashore at Roaring Beach and even being sailed as far afield as Port Davey. These tales have become part of the character and history of D12.
The McKay family have owned Janus for the past 15 years, during which time she has been raced consistently with the Kettering Yacht Club and competed in numerous Derwent Class regattas.
Janus has recently received an 80th birthday present of her own, with local boatbuilder Matthew Stevens carrying out structural work to her hull, including refastening and re-setting. With the work complete, D12 is set for many more years on the water.
