D18 Merlin
(Arthurian Legend)
A legendary wizard known for wisdom and magic
Built in Queenstown in 1953 by Cliff Probin, Merlin was constructed in Pontifex Street, a long way from the waters where she would eventually sail. Probin was foreman carpenter at Mt Lyell and sourced top-quality Huon Pine for the build. Once complete, Merlin was trucked to Hobart on an 18-hour journey before being launched.
She went on to spend many years sailing and racing around southern Tasmania, including a long period on the Huon River. She eventually made her way to Kettering, where she became part of the active Derwent Class fleet.
From 2020 to 2023, Merlin underwent an extensive owner-led restoration. Her hull was refastened and splined, the deck splined and glassed, and she received a new rudder shaft and tube, chainplates, deck hardware, keel bolts, bowsprit and hatches, along with plenty of other work.
Now back on the water, Merlin is a regular, competitive member of the Derwent Class fleet, continuing a sailing and racing history that began more than 70 years ago.
