D4 nymph
(Greek Mythology)
A nature spirit from Greek mythology associated with natural places such as rivers, forests, and mountains.
Nymph was built by A C Smith in the Montagu Bay area of Hobart and launched in November 1928. She was one of the original six Derwent Class yachts to begin racing with the Derwent Sailing Squadron in the 1928–29 season.
Nymph enjoyed a particularly successful early racing career, winning six Derwent Sailing Squadron Championship Pennants between 1929 and 1941, along with several Hobart Regatta victories. In the 1929–30 season she won both the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania and Derwent Sailing Squadron Championships, as well as the Cygnet Cup and Webster Cup.
In later years Nymph was briefly owned and raced by the Governor of Tasmania, Lord Rowallan. At the end of his term in 1964, he donated her to the Boy Scouts Association, who continued to race her before she was eventually sold and converted to a cruising yacht by Athol Walter in the late 1960s.
In 2019 Nymph was found in a paddock at Cygnet in very poor condition. She was restored to her original Derwent Class specifications, with most of the work completed by shipwright Tom Blue during 2024. Nymph was refloated in January 2025 and now sails from Kettering.
