undine too

(Local Mystery)
Two yachts, one name, one sail number, and a story still being untangled

This is where the history of D13 gets a little complicated. The yacht recently restored at Cygnet Wooden Boats and now sailing with the Kettering fleet has a strong connection to the story of Undine. There is certainly enough history and local knowledge to suggest that she may be the original hull, built by Don Colbourn in Hobart in 1948 for P. and D. Hadlow.

The difficulty is that the name and D13 sail number are also attached to the other Undine now sailing with the Kettering fleet. The historical record is there, but it has become difficult to establish which parts of the story belong to which hull. As a result, both boats currently can claim a connection to the Undine name and D13.

For now, the Cygnet boat is known around the fleet as “Undine Too”, simply to distinguish the two while the history is investigated. Following her extensive restoration, she has recently been launched and has now joined the Derwent Class fleet at Kettering.

With both boats sailing again, D13 has perhaps the most intriguing story in the Derwent Class.
