d15 goblin
(European Folklore)
A mischievous supernatural creature, often associated with tricks and mischief.
Built in 1948 at Montagu Bay by Hobart boatbuilder A. W. Cuthbertson, Goblin was one of the post-war Derwents and was actively raced on the River Derwent through the 1950s and 60s.
Her racing career wasn't without incident. In 1950, Goblin was struck and sunk by the Huon Chief ferry during a regatta on the River Derwent. She was salvaged and returned to racing, adding another chapter to what has proved to be a remarkably resilient life.
After many years away from the fleet, Goblin was eventually found in a dilapidated state at Cygnet. Phil Myer took her on, and a major restoration was completed in 2019 with shipwright Dave Golding, securing the future of the boat while retaining the character of the original yacht.
Today Goblin is owned by Anna and Gus McKay and remains an active part of the Derwent fleet, both racing and sailing around the Channel area. She returned to regular racing following her restoration and continues to be competitive, finishing fourth overall in the 2025 Derwent Class Regatta and second overall in the 2026 Norglass Derwent Class Championships.
