Hey!

Welcome to the Derwent Class

If you’ve wandered past and wondered what all these little boats are about, well, you’ve found us!

The Derwent Class is a uniquely Tasmanian fleet of classic timber yachts, first launched on the River Derwent in 1926. For 100 years, these little boats have been racing, cruising and generally getting up to mischief around Tasmanian waters.

Today, a growing fleet of Derwents, more affectionately known as D’s, are being cared for and sailed by a new generation of custodians. Some have been sailing continuously for decades; others are being meticulously restored and brought back to life.

There are currently around 12 Derwents sailing with the fleet — and we’re hoping to see a few more back on the water yet.

Help keep the D’s sailing

These boats are part of Tasmania’s maritime heritage, but keeping them sailing takes time, materials, craftsmanship and plenty of elbow grease.

If you’ve enjoyed seeing the fleet, a small donation of $5 can help the Derwent Class Association keep these boats sailing, promote the class and preserve their history for the next generation.

Feel free to have a look around. If you have any questions or want to find out more about the Class, meet the boats and discover their stories, check out our website or get in touch - we’re always up for a chat.

Happy sailing!
